Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed that all the development works for the tertiary hospital being developed in Addu City have been completed except for the installation of equipment.

Muizzu revealed this via twitter on Monday morning.

The tertiary hospital will have 100 beds and is being constructed after making modifications to a block of the Addu City's Equatorial Convention Center, which was developed during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s tenure for the SAARC Summit in 2011. The area was re-designated into an uninhabited island in order to transform it into a tourist attraction.

Following the demolition of the Equatorial Convention Center, Nasheed had initially expressed disappointment over it, having stated that his party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) only wishes to build and not to destroy anything. He had later on warned against making changes to the ongoing project and expressed hope that the next government will quickly complete the hospital project.

Deputy Minister Mohamed Rafeeq Hussain had earlier stated that most of the project will be completed by October and that equipment needed for the center will arrive by October. Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had also stated that the tertiary hospital will be completed by June, boasting that once the hospital is completed, it will beat the ones in capital Male’ city in terms of services.

A loan agreement was signed under the administration of former President Mohamed Nasheed in 2011 with the Saudi Fund, to create a 100-bed hospital in Addu City. The agreement is a USD 12.5 million (MVR 192.7 million) agreement. An additional loan was secured for the project under Dr. Mohamed Waheed's administration on 17th October 2012. A loan of USD 8.4 million (MVR 129.5 million) was secured from OPEC Fund for Development (OFID).
