Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has expressed concern over the “lack of high-level government representation” at the ceremony to mark the Maldives 50th Republic Day.
Gayoom made the statement via twitter on Monday morning.
The tweet reads that Gayoom is “deeply dismayed” by the lack of high-level government representation at the official event to mark the 50th Anniversary of Maldives' second republic. Gayoom went on to stress that not even one cabinet Minister, let alone the President himself, turned up.
“Is this how we cherish our national values?” posted the former President.
While outgoing President Abdulla Yameen had sent republic day greetings to the people, he had not attended the ceremony to mark the day let alone publicized a statement regarding the day.
This has caused the outgoing President to draw severe criticism from the citizens. As such, people have stated that his lack of attention to the occasion clearly shows how much he “loves” the nation.
It is notable that President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had extended felicitations of the day to the citizens. Solih is to take oath of office on the 17th of November.
