Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has taken over the security of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor late Sunday night.

This comes at a time Adeeb was taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for emergency medical treatment following a sudden health deterioration at around 8pm on Friday. He was treated at the hospital’s Emergency Room over kidney issues and has been transferred to a patient’s ward for observation since.

Adeeb’s legal representative Moosa Siraj revealed the transfer of Adeeb’s medical responsibility via twitter late Sunday night. As such, the lawyer stated that amid the former VP’s health deterioration and treatment at hospital, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) had given up the responsibility of Adeeb’s security and handed it over to the MCS.

Siraj stressed that this change is an indication that authorities do not wish to take the responsibility of Adeeb’s security and health condition.

The family of the former VP had pinned accusations on the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), stating that it is to be blamed for his ailing health. Last week, his wife Mariyam Nashwa revealed that Adeeb was prescribed a strong medication that had left him dizzy and fatigued. She said that according to the doctors; Adeeb's kidney stones have moved to his urethra. Nashwa blamed the correctional service for Adeeb's condition as they had on several occasions refused or delayed to abide by doctor’s instructions.

RaajjeMV understands that Adeeb will have to go into laser treatment if medication does not dissolve the kidney stones by Sunday night. So far, Adeeb has been injected with multiple painkillers and given four fluid injections for a contrast CT scan.

Since his imprisonment in 2015, Adeeb’s family and legal team have been voicing concern over his growing health issues. Diagnoses of Adeeb include kidney stones, internal cysts and vision impairment from glaucoma as well as cataracts since his incarceration. He has also been denied a doctor prescribed cancer screening for the past 3 years. The family has been imploring from the state to grant Adeeb medical leave, with the state repeatedly rejecting them, deeming him a flight risk.

Adeeb, the second and youngest vice president of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s tenure, is serving a 33-year prison for multiple allegations of corruption and terrorism for his involvement in an attempted assassination of President Yameen, as well as his involvement in the massive case of graft involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The Supreme Court had on February 1, 2018 said in a ruling that Adeeb's trials were politically motivated, biased and without due process and needs to be reinvestigated.
