Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
His wife Mariyam Nashwa said that he was admitted after his condition grew worse at around 8pm on Friday, but that they do not yet know what is wrong with him.
A few days earlier, his wife expressed concern that Adeeb has been given a dangerous medication that has left him dizzy and fatigued.
Adeeb, the first vice president of President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, is serving a 33-year prison for multiple counts of corruption and terrorism for his involvement in the attempted assassination of Yameen and the MMPRC embezzlement scandal.
Ever since his imprisonment in 2015, Adeeb’s family and legal team have voiced concern over his growing health issues, including internal cysts, kidney stones, and glaucoma.
The state has repeatedly rejected requests to grant him medical leave abroad after deeming him a flight risk, and President Yameen has said that he may only be released once he pays back the millions stolen from the state.
