The local government council of Dhidhdhoo island in Haa Alif atoll has said that they will be renting empty and uninhabited properties on the island.

Ali Hashim, president of the council, said that there are about 50 such plots of land in the island and that unchecked growth of vegetation and lack of maintenance at these properties cause difficulties for residents of the island, including aggravated pest problems.

Hashim said that the council will be asking owners of these properties to provide them with a price and duration for renting. The council said that they will ensure that the plots are maintained.

The council also said that the properties will be put to use for public interest purposes, such as agriculture or parking.
