Privately-run television station RaajjeTV has on Wednesday filed a court case to seek compensation of MVR one million for the losses attained by the station due to baseless allegations pinned on it by representative of Fonadhoo constituency in Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, as well as to declare the statements made by the MP against RaajjeTV, false.
RaajjeTV’s attorney Mohamed Nishan stated that Abdul Raheem had in March accused RaajjeTV of attempting to create public unrest and chaos in the country, further calling to shut the station down. Nishan refuted these as baseless and untrue. The lawyer also stressed that these false accusations had incurred numerous losses to the station.
RaajjeTV had made an appeal at the Civil Court to compensate the losses incurred due to Raheem’s statements, on Wednesday.
Moreover, Nishan stated that Raheem also needs to be penalized for falsely accusing the station’s programme head, Amir Saleem and senior journalist Mohamed Wisam of having a hand in the anti-government videos circulating on social media, which show three masked men in police uniforms threatening to join the opposition protests. Stressing that this was defamation, Nishan stated that Raheem needed to pay compensation for this as well.
Along with this case, there are further cases pending from the station at the Civil Court.
