The governments of India and the United States of America, two nations that have been vocal about their concerns over Maldives’ democratic future, has extended congratulations over Sunday’s ballots.
In a statement on Monday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that the successful elections mark a triumph of democratic forces in Maldives.
“[the polls] also reflects the firm commitment to the values of democracy and the rule of law, India looks forward to working closely with the Maldives in further deepening our partnership”, the statement said.
In their statement, the US described polling in the Maldives as peaceful and said, ‘"We urge calm and respect for the will of the people’.
Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s administration faced hefty international scrutiny for his suppression of dissent, alleged unlawful arrests, and abuse of power.
