Senior prisons officers disciplined for ‘anti-campaigning’

After being unable to confirm their guilt, they were sidelined from their duties
Correctional service employees have earlier expressed concern that they are being neglected by the current administration

Three senior officers of the Maldives Correctional Service have been disciplined for ‘anti-campaigning’ against President Abdulla Yameen.

Male’ Prison director SP Moosa Anwar and Asseyri Prison director SP Mohamed Shaheen were transferred to the Male’ head office while Male’ Prison’s deputy director Ibrahim Afeef was transferred to Maafushi Prison.

RaajjeMV understands that the officers were interrogated for allegedly campaigning against President Yameen, who is vying for re-election. After being unable to confirm their guilt, they were sidelined from their duties.

Correctional service’s information officer Ahmed Lugman denied that such an incident happened and the correctional service’s wesite states that they always prepare prior to an election due to the potential for disorder inside prisons and that some senior officers are transferred to centrally control their operations.

There have been reports that employees at the civil service and government-affiliated companies that support the opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are being harassed by their employers and even fired from their jobs.

Correctional service employees have earlier expressed concern that they are being neglected by the current administration, which has conducted housing projects for police and military officers but not given much benefits to correctional service employees.
