Shifa Mohamed, the Mayor of Male’ City and former education ministry, has said that the current administration has ruined the education sector.

Speaking at an opposition coalition’s campaign event in ADh. Maamigili on Thursday night, Shifa said the government has stifled Bachelor of Technology programmes, which are crucial for Maldivian students.

Shifa accused the government of ruining the students’ academic future by closing schools for political activities and forcing principals to attend political events.

She also noted that some senior government officials have said that they do not have to allow academic opportunities for students with lower grades.

She also claimed that the ministry is told which students to fail which ones to pass after they reach the eighth grade and that they also pick which ones to be given an O and A level education.

She said that, unlike before when only children of rich and prominent families receive an education, everyone has the right to receive opportunities for an education now.
