A fire broke out in Hinavvaru island of Lhaviyani atoll early Thursday morning.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said that its northern area command received a report of a fire at the island's now deserted junkyard, at around 3:23am.

Noting that firemen from the Northern Area Naifaru fire station were immediately dispatched to Hinnavaru, MNDF said that a team from Maafilaa Fushi had been active in extinguishing the fire as well.

It added that the fire was controlled by 5am, and that there were on injuries in the incident.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) is investigating the matter.
