US Embassy refutes 'baseless' reports by state media PSM

The article by the state media reads that America is in favor of bringing the Joint Opposition Parties to power

'Free and fair elections are of paramount important to Maldives future'

'The Embassy is aware that a fake cable is circulating that appeals to discuss the upcoming election'

The Embassy of the United States of America, accredited to both Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives has on Wednesday refuted news circulated by Public Service Media (PSM) news regarding “communication between the US Embassy in Colombo and US Department of State” regarding the upcoming Presidential election.

US Embassy in Colombo had publicized its statement refuting these claims through a tweet posted through its official twitter account on Wednesday. The statement reads that the US Embassy to Sri Lanka and Maldives is “aware that a fake cable is circulating that appears to discuss the upcoming elections in the Maldives.” The Embassy dismissed this as misinformation.

“The cable is fraudulent and unrelated to the US embassy. Free and fair elections are of paramount important to Maldives future” reads the statement by the Embassy.

The article by government-run broadcaster PSM itself mentions communication between the Embassy and US Department of State.

“It was revealed that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) agreed to diminish the MNDF through a secret cable held between the US Embassy in Colombo and US Department of State” translates the article typed out in Dhivehi by PSM news.

The article by the state media reads that America is in favor of bringing the Joint Opposition Parties of the Maldives to power.

It is notable that state media is spreading misinformation about the September election during a time that baseless and untrue allegations are being spearheaded by the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM). It is observed that top officials of the current administration run by President Abdulla Yameen and leaders of PPM’s Parliamentary Group are seen adding fuel to the fire by circulating this misinformation even more.
