Facilitating construction of ‘a bridge’ is not enough reason for President Abdulla Yameen to be given a second term in office, deputy leader of the Jumhooree Party, Abdulla Ameen has said.

Ameen said while speaking at the Joint Opposition rally in Thinadhoo island of Gaaf Dhaal atoll that President Yameen has deliberately eroded the powers of the state and that representations of development does not absolve him of his’ tyranny against the Maldivian people’.

Ameen said that it is the responsibility of every leader of the state to uphold the constitution and guarantee that all citizens’ rights are well protected.

“The construction of a bridge, a harbor, a building, none of it is going to guarantee you a second term” Ameen said, referring to President Yameen.

The construction of the Sinamalé Bridge, which was officially opened on Thursday night though is not available for public use yet, was key pledge in Yameen’s campaign during the 2013 elections.
