Engine oil has been dumped in opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s campaign site in Th. Thimarafushi and Addu City’s Feydhoo.
MDP stated that the incident in Feydhoo occurred on Monday night and photos on social media show that the outer wall of the campaign site has been drenched in engine oil.
Thimarafushi MP Anwar Ibrahim said that oil was also thrown on the outer wall at their campaign site after they had gone to attend the Eid prayer.
The lawmaker said that the perpetrators were young boys who are being manipulated by government coordinators who have arrived in the island from Male’. He said that they have failed in their attempt to make it seem as if there was no support for the opposition in Thimarafushi.
He also said that the incident has been reported and that despite the attack, the locals who support the opposition will never come out to throw oil at the ruling party’s campaign site.
Oil was also thrown at the MDP campaign site in Male’ in earlier incidents.
Men on motorcycles had also thrown oil-filled packets at Joint Opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s campaign team during a door-to-door campaign in Hulhumale’ earlier.
