Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Vice President Mohamed Shifaz has said that they have received information that re-registration work is being done in Mulieaage, the official residence of the President.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Joint Opposition on Tuesday, Shifaz said that even though the deadline for re-registration has been reached, some have been seen carrying around bundles of re-registration applications.

The deputy leader of the main opposition party said that they were told that the applications are being sent to Male’ and taken to Muliaage, which is doing the work that the Elections Commission (EC) is tasked with.

Shifaz highlighted how concerning this is for anyone who wants a fair and transparent election and said that they have received enough information to find out who are behind it and urged independent institutions to investigate.

He said that they have also received information that the results of the votes at polling stations are to be sent through tablets. Highlighting that the opposition will not accept results sent from tablets, Shifaz called on the Elections Commission not to bother with counting votes if they cannot write them down with pen and paper.

He added that the Joint Opposition has a technical team capable enough to figure out the attempts at electoral fraud.

While EC has stated that they have received 95,000 re-registration applications, Shifaz said that they have not clarified how much of it they have processed in the past 24 hours, noting that such an amount has never been seen in any Maldivian election.

At the press conference, Shifaz raised many concerns regarding the election and aimed numerous criticisms at EC.
