Opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that his administration would not do anything that could threaten the stability and security of the Indian Ocean region.
Solih said this during a campaign rally in Gan island of Laamu atoll on Tuesday night, where he highlighted that the atoll 'is in an important' region.
Noting that there 'is a lot to consider when developing the region', he said that his administration will not do anything that threatens the safety and security of the Indian Ocean.
Furthermore, Solih said that he will ensure that any such development projects 'do not jeopardize the Maldives' independence and sovereignty.
The opposition presidential hopeful also vowed to resolve other issues including housing, which he described as the biggest 'issue' for Maldivians currently, as well as to improve the health sector so that 'people do not have to beg'.
Further noting that democracy cannot exist without an independent judiciary, Solih assured that his administration 'will not even attempt to influence the courts'.
While the current administration faces multiple allegations including influencing the judiciary, corruption and abuse of human rights, the country is preparing for the 2018 presidential elections with the first round slated for September 23.
