Officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) have on Wednesday obstructed the 12 Members of Parliament unseated by the Elections Commission when they arrived to partake in Parliament’s sitting.

The 12 MPs had arrived in a sitting scheduled for 01:00 p.m., however, officers of MPS had obstructed their entry by blocking the street leading to the Parliament building with barricades on Wednesday morning.

Although officers had stopped the lawmakers from entering Parliament, they had continued to protest on the streets. While officers had blocked the street with barricades, officers had even guarded the Parliament building.

The 12 MPs face charges for entering the parliament premises by breaking through police ranks during a lockdown on the 24th of July in the previous year after they had been unseated by the EC.

The 12 unseated MPs are Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz, Thulusdhoo MP Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim, Central-Hithadhoo MP Ibrahim Mohamed Didi, North-Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam, kendhoo MP Ali Hussain, South-Henveiru MP Mohamed Abdul Kareem, West-Maafannu MP Mohamed Falah, Nolhivaram MP Hussain Areef, Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth, Villingili MP Saud Hussain, and North-Henveiru MP Abdulla Shahid.
