GA. Maamendhoo residents have held a walk to call for the release of political leaders, former prosecutor general Muhthaz Muhsin, and ADh. Maamigili magistrate court judge Ahmed Nihan.
During the walk on Friday evening, island residents held placards and pasted posters of the jailed politicians and state officials.
Around 150 Maamendhoo citizens participated in the walk, including the families of the former prosecutor general and magistrate court judge.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, Maamendhoo council president Mohamed Zaeem noted that two of the prisoners are native to the island and said that they do not wish for the current administration to unlawfully keep even one more of their fellow island residents imprisoned.
The councilor also said that he is concerned about what will happen to President Abdulla Yameen’s running mate Dr. Mohamed Shaheem, who is also a native of Maamendhoo.
Former prosecutor general Muhthaz Muhsin was sentenced over terrorism-related charges to 17 years in prison on 9 June 2016. Muhsin and Maamigili magistrate court Nihan were imprisoned on charges of attempting to arrest President Yameen through a court order.
