Dunya clings to high hopes for justice in brother Faris's conviction
Dunya expressed her hope that her father, Gayoom, brother Faris and brother-in-law Mohamed Nadheem will face justice in the trials against them
She said that Faris was convicted over 11 months after being kept in confinement
Faris was sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s daughter Dunya Maumoon has said that she hopes justice will be served for her family members, following the prison sentenced many deems biased issued on her brother and Member of Parliament for Dhiggaru constituency Ahmed Faris Maumoon.

In a short statement released by the former foreign minister in her uncle incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s regime, Dunya states that she received the news of her brother’s conviction with utmost grievance. She noted that Faris was convicted to four months and 24 days in prison over 11 months since he had been kept in detention. She goes on to say that Faris is someone who has been actively involved in the frontlines of politics with their father, Gayoom, for a long period of time.

The statement by Dunya, who has on several occasions been torn between her loyalty to her uncle and her love for her father, further reads that Faris played an important role in bringing the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives into existence.

Dunya expressed her hope that her father, Gayoom, brother Faris and brother-in-law Mohamed Nadheem will face justice in the trials against them.

“I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stands by me and my family during these difficult times” her statement concluded.

The Criminal Court had on Wednesday found Faris guilty of unlawfully representing the ruling party in a joint opposition press conference where he had supposedly used PPM’s flag and logo.
