It has been more than two years since former defense minister Tholhath Ibrahim was moved to house arrest after authorities began renovations in his cell.

Tholhath was sentenced to 10 years in prison on 10 April 2015 after being found guilty of terrorism charges for arresting Abdulla Mohamed, then chief judge of the Criminal Court, during Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.

An official of the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has confirmed to RaajjeMV that Tholhath has remained under house arrest after being moved from his cell for renovations two years ago. The official said that renovations in his cell are 'still not complete'.

Tholhath was transferred to his house in 2016. While his cellmate, Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla, was also transferred home at the time, Imran has been repeatedly taken back to prison and then to his house since then. Imran was last transferred to house arrest on September 21, last year, but has since been in prison.

RaajjeMV understands that MCS has given Tholhath permission to leave his house on important errands and that while he lives in Hulhumale’, he travels to Male’ from time to time.
