The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has vowed to investigate the various unlawful activities of the Local Government Authority, and to take action action against those found guilty.

A statement released by the opposition MDP on Saturday states that the party is closely monitoring the case of the mass suspension of island councilors 'under the political influence' of the administration of President Abdulla Yameen.

A total of 26 councilors from different islands were suspended for a period of three months with no pay by the LGA, claiming that they were involved in the presidential primaries held by MDP.

MDP said that these actions make the tyranny and injustice of the current administration 'perfectly clear'.

LGA had suspended the councilors amid the preparations for the MDP’s national congress in Ukulhas island of Alif Alif atoll. According to the opposition, the authority had carried this act out to hamper their work.

Ukulhas island council’s President is also included within the suspended councilors.

The main opposition party gave it’s assurance to the people that they will take strict action against those who conduct such unlawful activities within LGA, adding that salaries of councilors who have been suspended by the government to fulfill it’s political purposes, will be compensated in the government of the opposition after thorough evaluation.
