JP votes to ban elections to choose party leader
The resolution was passed at the JP congress on Friday at Paradise Island Resort

The resolution was passed with votes from over 300 JP members at the congress

Jumhooree Party (JP) has passed a resolution to ban elections to choose the party leader.

The resolution was passed at the JP congress on Friday at Paradise Island Resort.

According to the resolution, an election to choose a new JP leader will be held after the Supreme Court makes a decision regarding the Criminal Court’s prison conviction issued to JP leader Qasim Ibrahim, or after the sentence is served, and after Qasim himself agrees to hold the election.

Even JP council members are disallowed from running for the party leadership. The resolution was passed with votes from over 300 JP members at the congress.

400 people attended the party congress in which various resolutions were passed.

The resolution to not elect a party leader comes after JP stated that current leader Qasim would not be able to contest due to his prison conviction. Even after the party opened the opportunity to vie for the senior positions, no one contested for the position of party leader.
