The Elections Commission (EC) of the Maldives has invited international bodies to observe the Maldives Presidential Elections slated for the 23rd of September.

According to the Commission, 10 countries had been invited. They are two countries from Europe, two countries of SAARC, two countries from the Asia Pacific, one Arab country as well as three international associations.

While the commission had on Wednesday afternoon announced the invitation via twitter, they had not specified the countries or associations.

RaajjeMV was unable to attain further information regarding the matter at the time of publishing as commission member and spokesperson Ahmed Akram had not answered the station’s calls.

The EC’s tweet comes at a time when the spokesperson had stated that the Commission will not allow the international community to interfere with the election, adding that up until now, the international community had been unsuccessful in their attempts to hinder the Maldivian elections.

The opposition had responded to this by saying that it is not the international community attempting to hinder the election, rather incumbent President Yameen Abdul Gayoom through his influence in the EC.
