The Health Ministry has said that only some services will be available at the tertiary hospital being developed in Addu City.

Speaking to an online news outlet, Deputy Minister Mohamed Rafeeq Hussain said that their search for doctors and health professionals for the hospital will commence nearing the official opening of the hospital and that not all the services will be made available at first and more will be made available later.

Rafeeq said that most of the project will be completed by October and that equipment needed for the center will arrive by October.

While the Deputy Minister has revealed this, Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had assured the public that the tertiary hospital will be completed by June, boasting that once the hospital is completed, it will beat the ones in capital Male’ city in terms of services and that many will be travelling to Addu city from capital city for medical treatment.

The tertiary hospital will have 100 beds and is being constructed after making modifications to a block of the Addu City's Equatorial Convention Center.

A loan agreement was signed under the administration of former President Mohamed Nasheed in 2011 with the Saudi Fund, to create a 100-bed hospital in Addu City. The agreement is a USD 12.5 million (MVR 192.7 million) agreement.

An additional loan was secured for the project under Dr. Mohamed Waheed's administration on 17th October 2012. A loan of USD 8.4 million (MVR 129.5 million) was secured from OPEC Fund for Development (OFID).
