ACC is in contempt of the Supreme Court: MP Mahloof
MP Mahloof said that the members of the commission are in contempt
The ACC concluded its investigation into a state agreement with Qasim’s Villa Group
The ACC had found that the agreement resulted in a loss of over MVR 1.6 billion for the state

The entirety of the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) members are liable for contempt of the Supreme Court, said MP Ahmed Mahloof respoding to its decision on a case involving opposition leader Qasim Ibrahim.

MP Mahloof said on Twitter that the commission’s conclusion of an investigation is directly contradictory to an earlier Supreme Court ruling and that precedents for holding invidividuals in contempt have been set for less egregious affronts.

In his tweet, the Galolhu-South constituency lawmaker referred to the case of Anil Mufeed, an opposition activist who was found in contempt for making the remark, ‘thank you for the reload’ after a Criminal Court judge extended his remand.

The ACC concluded its investigation into a state agreement with Qasim’s Villa Group, where the company was leased a number of islands and lagoons.

The state signed a settlement agreement with Villa pertaining to said islands and lagoons, which made payment and several terms lax. The ACC had found that this resulted in a loss of over MVR 1.6 billion for the state.

In 2013, the state had terminated the agreement, although the Supreme Court had ruled in 2015 that the agreement was legitimate and that it was terminated by the state unfairly.
