President Abdulla Yameen and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have officially inaugurated the theme park developed at the Rarani Bageecha.

The winter theme park comes with an ice-skating rink and a snow slide, as the president and first lady had witnessed in their tour of the establishment on Friday evening.

The park was built in place of the Kalhu Vakaru Miskiy, which was built in the 1700s by Sultan Shamsuddeen II.

The dismantling of the 16th century mosque was met with criticism and backlash for apparent disregard for local culture and history, aimed at President Yameen and his government, notably Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu.

While the winter theme park was built in place of a historical mosque, the Rasrani Bageecha itself stands in place of the Sultan Park, used by aforementioned Sultan Shamsuddeen as his garden.

The mosque and the premises had been the only historical tourist attraction in capital city Malé.
