Police Chief Superintendent Ahmed Shifan has said that they will guarantee the safety of witnesses that give statements for police probes, even if it means protecting their identity.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Shifan said that hearing secret witnesses at trials do not fall outside legal boundaries and that doing so is quite common even in huge cases.
Shifan said that since giving testimonies is linked to their security, the police service is obliged to protect them, adding that article 149 of the Criminal Code states that witnesses should be protected.
He also highlighted that secret witnesses were presented in the prominent death cases and other serious cases in the past five years.
Shifan ended by vowing to keep protecting the identity of witnesses in their investigation.
