Court sets hearing in trial of SC justices and ex-president Maumoon for Tuesday

The Criminal Court has scheduled another hearing in the obstruction of justice charges against former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and two Supreme Court justices for Tuesday.
The hearing is set for 11:00am. The last hearing in the case was held on Sunday, where the presiding judge had decided not to accept witness statements presented by the defendants.
This contentious decision was made after hearing testimonies from witnesses presented by the prosecution, the judge said. Both Supreme Court justices had presented witnesses in their defence.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed were arrested on February 5th, along with former president Maumoon who prosecutors say are key figures that led a conspiracy to overthrow the government.
The government began making arrests in response to a reported coup after a contentious Supreme Court ruling to free nine unfairly detained prisoners. Maumoon and the Supreme Court justices are facing a number of charges.
