The Maldives Police Service on Monday released three individuals arrested in Gan island of Laamu atoll in connection to the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) primary elections in May.
Ahmed Nabeel, Ibrahim Idhris, and Mohamed Zaki were arrested after an altercation with police officers clearing the party’s polling station at the island.
Among the charges against the trio include assault and threatening to take the life of a law enforcement officer. They were arrested on May 30th.
The Elections Commission had told MDP that it will not be allowed to conduct ballots with former president Mohamed Nasheed as a candidate.
Ballots were held as police officers cleared polling stations across the country. The Elections Commission has said that it is working to penalize the party and individuals involved with the ballots.
On Sunday, the Local Government Authority said that it is investigating council members of Ukulhas island for their involvement in their allegedly illegal ballots.
