Jumhoree Party (JP) deputy leader and Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz’s hearing on the state’s influencing of official conduct case has been cancelled.

The Criminal Court did not disclose a reason for cancelling the hearing scheduled for 12pm on Saturday.

Some of the previously scheduled hearings had been cancelled as well.

If convicted, the former police commissioner could face a jail term of nine months and 18 days.

Riyaz has also been charged with terrorism for his involvement in an alleged coup, as well as obstruction with 11 other opposition parliamentarians for allegedly breaking police lines and entering the parliament building. These trials are currently ongoing at the Criminal Court.

He is also serving a jail term of four months and 24 days on obstruction, for allegedly not allowing the police access to his mobile phone, when approached with a court order to do so. He was found guilty by the High Court, after the state appealed the Criminal Court’s decision to acquit him.
