Maldives National Defense Force has said that the radar near HA. Innafinolhu was broken and so could not pick up the Iranian vessel which ran aground near the island on Thursday.
At a press conference on Sunday, Principal Director of the Coast Guard Leftenant Colonel Mohamed Saleem said the radar in nearby Uligamu was disabled due to a lightning strike.
The Colonel said that they are now working to upgrade it and that a team from the Indian government will be coming to fix it in June.
He said that once the radar station in Uligamu is upgraded, the military will be able to more easily monitor vessels traveling in the area.
He also said that the Indian government is planning to establish 10 radar stations in Maldives as free aid.
Also at the press conference, Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said the boat contained 115kg of drugs which washed ashore on the nearby islands.
