Three men from L. Gan island who had obstructed police officers trying to stop the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primaries have been given 10 days in remand on Friday.

Ahmed Nabeel, Ibrahim Idhrees, and Mohamed Zaki were arrested under a court warrant on Thursday night.

They were arrested for obstructing officers trying to stop the voting at an MDP campaign site in the island on Wednesday.

RaajjeMV understands that they are being investigated for allegedly threatening and assaulting police officers. RaajjeMV were not able to contact the police service at the time of publishing.

A witness told RaajjeMV that when officers tried to stop the voting, people began placing their votes inside a concrete mixer. Officers could not take away the machine so they tried to confiscate the ballot papers, which lead to the tellers leaving with the papers, he said, adding that MDP members confronted the officers when, in their attempt to grab the ballot papers, Ibrahim Zaki, one of the tellers, fell and broke his toe. The other two were also at the scene and joined in the confrontation.
