An inmate at the state-run detention facility in Maafushi island of Kaafu atoll has died of causes yet unrevealed to the public.

30-year-old Ali Abdulla, native to capital city Malé, had been serving a 25-year jail sentence on drug trafficking charges.

The Maldives Correctional Service, which confirmed the incident, said Abdulla had served six years and eight months of his jail term.

Authorities have not revealed a reason for Abdulla’s death.
