Jumhoree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim has vowed that the opposition coalition will put forth one candidate.

He said this in a tweet on Tuesday while senior members of his party have been criticizing former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is campaigning for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s ticket for this year’s presidential election.

However, it is likely that Qasim aimed the tweet at members of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) who have asserted that Nasheed will not be able to contest the presidential election.

The disagreements within the opposition coalition began after JP’s deputy leader Ameen Ibrahim said that people are concerned over Nasheed vying for the presidency again.

In response, MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef said that the opposition coalition’s committee that agreed to put forth one candidate had consisted of two JP members who fully understand all the details, and that Ameen’s words were an indication that people who are watching from afar are ignorant of the situation.
