The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has on Monday announced locations where they will be setting up polling stations for their upcoming primary elections.

The party put up details of these locations on their website, and ballot boxes in most islands will be placed at respective party offices and assembly sites.

They are to have five polling stations set up in capital city Malé; one each for residents of Henveiru, Galolhu, Mahchangoalhi, central Maafannu, and south Maafannu.

The party will also set up two polling stations in Colombo and in Kandy for members residing in Sri Lanka. The party will also set up two polling stations in India, one in Thiruvananthapuram and the other in Bangalore.

Further, the party is to also set up a polling station in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur and in London. Voting will be held on Wednesday, 30th May.

The ballots are being held under irresolute circumstances with the Elections Commission having threatened to dissolve the party if it allows former president Mohamed Nasheed, its only candidate, to contest.

The party has denounced the threats as ‘unlawful and unwarranted strict measures’ and maintained that Nasheed has been proven to be a victim of unfair prosecution and highlighted the United Nations Human Rights Commission call to quash his conviction and ‘restore his political rights’.
