Residents in Hoadedhdhoo island in Gaafu Dhaal atoll are facing a power outage that lasted since Friday night.
Mohamed Ashraf, chair of the island’s local government council, said that one of the island’s two generators underwent an abrupt technical mishap, that led to its ‘body’ being destroyed.
Even before Friday night’s incident, the island had been experiencing sporadic power outages. Ashraf said that the island now has no power and that this a point of tremendous frustration for residents.
Authorities have brought in a generator from the neighbouring Madaveli island and installed it there. Islands in the outlying atolls experience constant issue with electricity supply.
The Fenaka Corporation, a state-run utilities company exposed through an audit to have rampant corruption within it, recently began supplying new generators to some of the islands where power outages have been most common.
