Adverse weather shuts down Foakaidhoo harbour, vessels redirected to neighbouring island

Adverse weather conditions and strong currents brought on by Maldives’ ongoing ‘Hulhangu’ monsoon has caused the habour in Foakaidhoo island to shut down.

Mohamed Rasheed, chair of the Shaviyani atoll island’s local government council, said that the issue is one that recurs this season every year.

Rasheed said that strong currents make it ‘impossible’ to keep vessels docked at the island’s harbour. Vessels bound to Foakaidhoo are being directed to the neighbouring Milandhoo island.

The island’s council further said that while strong currents at their harbour is tackled by docking vessels on another coast, currents have been extraordinarily strong around the island.
