Maldives Police Service’s disciplinary committee has decided to dismiss Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abdul Mannaan Yusuf.
Mannaan had already been sidelined from his duties since November last year.
He has been accused of attempting to implement the Supreme Court's controversial February order, to release nine high-profile political prisoners and reinstate 12 opposition MPs to parliament.
While RaajjeMV understands the committee made the decision to dismiss him from the service on Monday, neither Mannaan nor the police service has disclosed the reason for the dismissal.
Mannaan still has the chance to appeal the decision to the appeal board, and then to the employment tribunal. He also has the right to take the issue to court.
It is alleged that Mannaan, who is a close friend of now jailed former Police Commissioner Ahmed Areef, played a prominent role in trying to implement the February 1 Supreme Court order.
The disciplinary board had dismissed other police officers that worked to implement the order, and a number of officers have now been jailed.
President Abdulla Yameen has said that the court order was an attempt to overthrow the government and trials are already underway for those who are alleged to have played an important role in it, including former Police Commissioner Areef, Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, Justice Ali Hameed, and his own half-brother, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
