The amount stolen in the robbery is estimated to reach MVR 142,000

An employee of Gaaf Alif Kolamaafushi Council has been arrested over a robbery case reported on Monday.

The individual arrested over the robbery is the council's finance officer Izzath Abdulla. He was arrested at around 10pm on Monday, under a court order and  is accused to of being involved in the robbery of over MVR 100,000.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Island Council Chief Ibrahim Aleem said that Izzath is currently under police custody at the Gaaf Alif Villigili police station and that the court will decide on his remand later on Tuesday.

Aleem noted that Izzath is a 'well-behaved employee' and that he did not have a criminal record of theft or any other crime. Aleem added that he 'suspects that Aleem was taken in custody for being negligent in his employment responsibilities'.

Noting that the safe was damaged in the robbery, Aleem highlighted that Izzath 'already had a key to the safe'.

The cash amount stolen- both inside the safe and the 'Mosque Fund Box'- is estimated to total upto MVR 142,000. However, Aleem emphasized 'there is no way to confirm the amount'.

The money was for distributing Ramadan allowances to employees of the council and included money for bill payments as well.
