The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Women’s Wing has on Monday held a Maahefun, a type of traditional pre-Ramadan feast, in capital city Malé.
General members of the Women’s Wing organized the feast on behalf of party leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed, who is also founder and leader of the party.
Nasheed, who currently lives in self exile after local courts found him guilty of terror charges and sentenced him to 13 years in prison, spoke to those gathered at the event through Skype.
The former president told his supporters on Monday that he does not doubt his name being on the presidential ballots, slated for later this year. The United Nations Human Rights Commission has called on the Maldivian government to quash Nasheed's conviction and ensure that he is allowed to do so.
Nasheed’s campaign manager for the party’s presidential primary election, set for May 30th, had also discussed the framework of the campaign itself as well as Nasheed’s manifesto.
Several parliamentarians, prominent members of the party, members of its general assembly, as well as supporters had participated in the event, held at the party's assembly site in Henveiru ward in Malé.
