A trial hearing has been set for Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and former Police Commissioner Ahmed Areef for Monday regarding the terrorism charges against them.

The Chief Justice and former Police Commissioner have been charged for issuing a Supreme Court order that threatened national security, using police officers against each other to create public unrest, attempting to overthrow the government, and influencing the government.

Preliminary hearings on the charges are being held separately. Abdulla Saeed’s hearing will be held at 1pm and Areef’s at 3pm.

Because of the Supreme Court order on February 1 to release political prisoners and reinstate opposition MPs to parliament, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Justice Ali Hameed, and others have also been arrested.

Chief Justice Saeed is already serving prison sentences totaling one year and two months after being convicted of influencing official conduct and obstruction of state duties. He is also charged with accepting bribes and obstruction of justice.
