Prominent lawyer Husnu Suood has refuted Jumhoree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim’s call to reduce the number of members at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
In a tweet on Friday, Qasim said that it’s his highest goal as part of the reform efforts to amend the Constitution’s article 158, which deals with the commission.
Qasim said that, in order to free the JSC from political influence, he wishes to reduce the JSC members from 10 to 7 by removing article 158’s subsections e, g, and h, which state that JSC members should consist of a member of parliament, the Chair of the Civil Service Commission, and a person appointed by the President.
In response, former Attorney General Husnu Suood, who was a member of the Constitution’s drafting committee, said that Qasim’s ignorance of JSC’s recent history has led him to call for the reduction of its members.
Husnu Suood also asked the opposition leader to reconsider.
