Not even the Supreme Court can overturn former President Mohamed Nasheed’s 13-year prison conviction and so he cannot run in this year’s presidential election, says Azima Shukoor, the legal affairs minister at the President’s Office.
Speaking on state media PSM, Azima said there’s no legal case to be made for Nasheed to be able to run in the election, since he’s still serving the prison sentence for the Supreme Court conviction on terrorism charges.
Azima said that Nasheed will not be able to run in the election even if the the United Nation (UN)’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention calls for it since it would be illegal.
Some have accused Azima of having a personal bias against Nasheed. Also, her legal advice while the government negotiated terminating its deal with Indian company GMR led to tremendous financial damage to the state.
