Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen, the secretary general of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has on Wednesday called on President Abdulla Yameen.

Al-Othaimeen, who is at the helm of an organization that has aimed to be the ‘voice of the Muslim world’ for nearly fifty years, had inquired as to how he and the OIC can contribute to combating key issues in Maldives.

According to the President’s Office, Al-Othaimeen had expressed the OIC’s ‘commitment to assisting the Maldives and its people in every way possible’.

At the meeting, President Yameen had conveyed his interest in strengthening Maldives’ ties to the OIC and described the OIC as ‘the strongest organization for Islamic countries’.

Foreign Minister Mohamed Asim, Fisheries Minister Mohamed Shainee, and the President’s Office’s legal affairs minister Azima Shakoor, and Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer had been at Wednesday meeting.

Minister Asim has since left to Dhaka, Bangladesh, in order to take part I the 34th session of the OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers.
