Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen has met with a delegation of permanent representatives from the United Nations, who were briefed on the social and political situation in the Maldives.
In a meeting held at the President’s Office on Monday, the representatives were informed that the 45-day state of emergency imposed in the Maldives did not affect ‘general movements or businesses’.
This is consistent with the government’s claim that the state of emergency only applied to those being investigated for conspiring to overthrow the government, which does not correlate with numerous reports of cancellations at tourist outlets.
The briefing further highlighted Maldives’ development in fisheries, tourism, and energy industries. The representatives had reportedly ‘commended the remarkable strides’ Maldives has made and acknowledged various obstacles the nation faces.
Among some of the obstacles noted in the meeting, President Yameen noted ‘climate change, geography, and culture shock’.
