Hearing on terror allegations against ex-president Maumoon set for Sunday

The Criminal Court has scheduled a hearing on the terrorism charges put forth against former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The hearing has been set for 03:00pm on Sunday.

Maumoon is being charged under Maldives’ contentious Anti-Terrorism Act – an immensely vague law that has been used to prosecute a number of anti-government activists – for allegedly attempting to bribe several parliamentarians and judges.

The former president is also facing charges of obstructing justice, which was last week deemed to be adequate enough to move to trial.

Maumoon was arrested on the first few hours of February 6th, after President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency in the Maldives.
