President Abdulla Yameen has on Wednesday appointed Mohamed ‘Colonel’ Nasheed, the leader of the pro-government Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), as ambassador to Thailand.

The president presented Nasheed with his letter of appointment during an event held for it at the President’s Office.

Nasheed’s name was approved by parliament over 10 months ago, on 30th June last year. A total of 70 lawmakers in the 85-seat house had voted in favour of his appointment.

Nasheed, who was previously a member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), is a former parliamentarian.
