Military must protect nation from those greedy for power, say Maldives' president
He made the statement in his address to mark MNDF's 126th anniversary
He said that the country is filled with ‘greedy and selfish’ individuals ‘committing unlawful activities’
President Yameen also accused former leaders of ‘begging’ for military intervention in the Maldives

President Abdulla Yameen has said that the military has to defend the country against those ‘greedy for power’.

He made the statement in his address to mark the 126th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), where he highlighted that the nation ‘does not only need protection from foreign enemies’, adding that the country is in political chaos, and filled with ‘greedy and selfish’ individuals ‘committing unlawful activities’.

The President said that ‘there is an increase of individuals standing up against the government,’ and that people committing such acts include former leaders of the nation and government officials, and accused them of acting out of greed.

Furthermore, the President claimed that former leaders of the nation are ‘begging’ for military intervention in the Maldives.

“The people must think about all this,” said the President.

Noting that the Maldives is a hundred percent Muslim nation, he added that the military’s work ‘is important in ensuring that it remains so for the next generation’.

President Yameen also spoke at the police’s 85th anniversary ceremony on Wednesday night, where he told officers that they are there to protect the government ‘no matter the orders given to them’.
