Joint Opposition worried over unproven allegations against Maumoon
Maumoon was arrested on February 1 during the state of emergency and has since been charged with obstruction, bribery, and terrorism
Police claimed that Maumoon had been planning to overthrow the current administration since 2015
Ameeth said that the police service should not be able to accuse someone of serious crimes so casually

The Joint Opposition parties have expressed concern over the police service’s ‘unproven’ allegations against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The former president was arrested on February 1 during the state of emergency and has since been charged with obstruction, bribery, and terrorism.

At a Joint Opposition press conference on Tuesday, Maduvvari MP Mohamed Ameeth said the police service has been making groundless accusations against Maumoon during their press conferences.

Police on Monday claimed that Maumoon had been planning to overthrow his half-brother, President Abdulla Yameen’s administration since 2015. Regarding this, Ameeth said that while the police service has a strong and technologically modern intelligence department, it was unbelievable that the police had been unable to get information on such a conspiracy for two years.

Ameeth said that the police service should not be able to accuse someone of serious crimes so casually. He also criticized the police for not allowing journalists to ask questions at their press conferences.
