Police admits own error in reporting on hefty sums of cash linked to justice Ali Hameed
Officers had actually confiscated a sum of 3.4 million, over 10 times less
Shifaan had not clarified as to why such an immense error occurred
Justice Hameed is one of the many figures arrested over an alleged coup attempt

The Maldives Police Service had previously reported that their officers confiscated a sum of MVR 38 million from an apartment linked to detained justice Ali Hameed, by ‘mistake’.

Ahmed Shifaan, the police’s spokesperson, acknowledged the error when contacted by RaajjeMV on Tuesday and said that officers had actually confiscated a sum of 3.4 million, over 10 times less.

“The correct amount is MVR 3.4 million, we do not know how that became 38 million” he said.

However, Shifaan had not clarified as to why such an immense error in the information they gave to media outlets occurred.

At a press conference this Sunday, Shifaan had told journalists that police confiscated a sum of 38 million from an apartment linked to justice Hameed.

The police initially said, after their arrest of justices Abdulla Saeed and Ali Hameed, that they had found 3.4 million in such an apartment.

Police arrested the Supreme Court judges on allegations of accepting bribes and conspiring to overthrow the government. They are both currently remanded until sentencing on terror allegations and are also facing charges of obstructing an investigation.
