Former Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel has congratulated former President Mohamed Nasheed on the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Committee ruling in his favor regarding his terrorism conviction.
The UN human rights body on Monday called on the government to allow Nasheed to run in the 2018 presidential election, after finding that the judicial proceedings in Nasheed’s conviction ‘contained serious flaws’.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in prison on 13 March 2015 after being convicted on terrorism charges for jailing a judge. He is now living abroad in self-exile after fleeing his sentence.
Jameel, who was the first vice president of President Yameen’s administration before being impeached, said in a tweet on Monday that the UN ruling vindicated Nasheed and condemned the unfair treatment by President Yameen’s administration.
He said it showed the administration’s systematic human rights violations, and called for the immediate and unconditional release of the jailed politicians and justices.
Congratulations to Prez @MohamedNasheed on @UN ruling vindicating you & condemning unfair treatment by regime. It again shows beyond doubt YAG‘s systematic human rights violations. Politicians & Justices unfairly jailed must be released immediately & unconditionally.
